The United Nations has celebrated Wonder Woman’s 75th birthday by naming the comic book character, as it’s new honorary ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls.
There are those, however, both inside and outside the world organisation that want her to be pictured wearing less revealing costumes.
In fact, there are many who say the ambassador should be not only less-sexualised but a real woman.
The launch ceremony last week was marred by some 50 UN staffers who silently turned their backs to the stage.
An online petition started by UN staffers asked the General Secretary to reconsider the appointment saying, “The message the United Nations is sending to the world with this appointment is extremely disappointing”.
In her new position, Wonder Woman will move beyond battling Super-Villains to raise awareness of the UN’s campaign for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls as a critical component for a peaceful and prosperous world.
Leading up to the event, both the U.N. and DC Entertainment launched websites that provide regular updates and information about the campaign. Visit the U.N. site via www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/wonderwoman and DC’s site via WonderWomanAmbassador.com
