‘Women’s Intuition’

SheBrisbane came across an interesting article in the ABC affirming that ‘women’s intuition’ is no myth!

Science has now proven women are better than men at reading people’s thoughts and emotions, just by looking at their eyes.

Researchers from across the globe, including Queensland, tested the way genes influence a person’s cognitive empathy; their ability to accurately recognise another person’s emotional state.

Katrina Grasby from QIMR Berghofer, Brisbane’s Medical Research Institute said 90,000 people were shown different photographs of people’s eyes and asked to determine their mood.

She said the results showed women more consistently picked the correct feeling.

“Using this technique, we can get a measure on how those people accurately perceive the emotion,” Ms Grasby said.

“The participant selects one of four options to say what the emotion is they have perceived. And we found that females performed better than men on the test.

The international research team also identified the genetic region that influences this skill in women, but not men.

Ms Grasby said the findings created more questions about why women were more receptive to emotional cues.

“What does this specific genetic region encode for, or does it just influence something in our biology?” she said.

“We need to find out what is it that can influence some people to be better and more skilled at this particular task.”

The study was led by the University of Cambridge and involved collaborators from Australia, France, the Netherlands, and the United States.
