We were so honoured to attend the red carpet event at the 10th Asia Pacific Screen Awards Ceremony here in Brisbane last week. 2016 marked the tenth year that Australia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) has recognised and promoted cinematic excellence and cultural diversity of the world’s fastest growing film region: comprising 70 countries and areas, 4.5 billion people, and responsible for half of the world’s film output. The Asia Pacific Screen Awards, now with a permanent home in Brisbane; Australia’s New World City, are presented by Treasury Casino & Hotel, supported by Brisbane City Council and managed by economic development board Brisbane Marketing. APSA has the privilege of a unique collaboration with Paris-based UNESCO and FIAPF-International Federation of Film Producers Associations.
It was a glamorous black tie event and the room was filled with a record number of 1000 guests, including 2016 APSA nominees, jurors, 500 international guests and encompassing guests of concurrent international screen events in Brisbane: Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival (BAPFF), the Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinéma et de Télévision (CILECT) Congress and the Asian Animation Summit.
Nominated guests for every APSA Award category attended, from countries including Australia, India, Russian Federation, Republic of Korea, Turkey, Iraqi Kurdistan, United Arab Emirates, Islamic Republic of Iran, People’s Republic of China, Japan, and the Philippines.
We mingled with the elite crowd of guests before the awards ceremony got started including Jack Thompson, well known actor and also President for the Asia Pacific Screen Academy who was delighted to be in attendance once again and proud that the Academy has reached the milestone of 1000 members. We also got to meet our friendly Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Cr Graham Quirk, X-Factor Artist & Entertainer Dami Im and other local TV personalities and media guests.
The Awards Ceremony was hosted by David Wenham, well known Australian Actor and was accompanied by the lovely Anjali Rao, a multi-award winning journalist. They kept the crowd entertained throughout the ceremony as the winners started being announced, and we were served dinner & drinks. Other Australia guests in attendance included Director Gillian Armstrong(My Brilliant Career, Charlotte Gray), Director Bruce Beresford (Mao’s Last Dancer, Driving Miss Daisy), Director Rolf de Heer (Ten Canoes, Charlie’s Country), Actor Stephen Curry (Hounds of Love – Aus Premiere at BAPFF), Director Ben Young (Hounds of Love – Aus Premiere at BAPFF) and Jan Chapman, Producer and member of APSA International Jury.
We were amazed by the variety & style of the films from such a range of countries, and all award winners were very well deserved, and gave us such an insight into other worlds.

Best Performance by an Actor – Indian actor, Manoj Bajpayee in Aligargh
Best Performance by an Actress – Philippine actresss, Hasmine Killip in Ordinary People
Best Feature Film – Cold of Kalandar (Kalandar Soğuğu, Turkey, Hungary)
Best Achievement in Cinematography – Cold of Kalandar (Kalandar Soğuğu, Turkey, Hungary)
Youngest Cinema Awards – Nermin Aytekin, Mustafa Kara and Cevahir Şahin
