Please stop looking at my (D-cup) assets

September 4, 2016

This story is about my boobs. Actually, it’s about the men who continually look at my breasts just because they feel like it, and who consider direct eye contact as an optional afterthought.

I’ve been subjected to a lot of unwanted boob-watching lately. Perhaps it’s because I’m venturing out into public more often. As a freelancer I’m often cloistered at home, bashing out sentences on my laptop away from the general populace.

But honestly, the whole male boob-watching tendency feels like it’s worse than usual.

I appreciate the beauty of the breast

Before I go on, I need to point out that I’m a D-cup which is not particularly large. I mean I’m not knocking my boobs out of the way so I can see my toes or anything. I’m also not usually wearing outfits that reveal cleavage a man could drown in.

Even as a strongly heterosexual woman I can appreciate how a person’s gaze can be almost irresistibly and unavoidably drawn to a glorious pair that are proudly and obviously on display.

But men keep looking at mine even when I’m wearing a business shirt that barely hints at a shape underneath.

Incidents in question

Today I stepped off the train and a man looked straight at my breasts with impunity.

Yesterday, another stranger did the same as he stood back and allowed me to enter Coles in front of him. Was the glance a previously unspecified toll for his apparent good manners?

Don’t get me wrong, I like my breasts and I like when they’re appreciated. But the appreciator needs to be someone I’m on a first name basis with and in intimate relationship with, thanks very much. Not some random bloke who wants to get an eyeful on his way home from work.

What if the situation was reversed?

I also feel compelled to ask how men would feel if women went around obviously staring at their crotches.

Would that make them shift uncomfortably in their seats? Certainly I know many men like to rearrange themselves in public (don’t even get me started on that!) but how would you feel if some woman stared pointedly at your nether regions while you did it? I’m guessing you’d feel pretty uncomfortable.

As Julia Roberts said in Notting Hill, ‘They’re just breasts. Every second person on the planet has them’. Julia was right.

Please gentlemen, be gentlemanish

So gentlemen, try to exercise a little more self-control in public. The women of Brisbane will thank you for your efforts.

In short, stop being a ‘boob’ and stop looking at my boobs.
