With just a flick of a switch or two (or more) on Saturday you and your family can join the world’s largest movement for climate change.
It is the 10 the anniversary of the Australian-inspired Earth Hour where people, corporations and governments around the world turn off their lights for at least an hour to show support for a brighter future for the planet.
And again this year, Queensland and the rest of Australia are set to join the world, where Earth Hour is celebrated in more than 170 countries and more than 7000 cities.
More than six million Australians are expected to take part this year and switch off between 8.30pm and 9.30pm as a symbol of support for a low pollution, clean energy future for all generations.
Launched in Sydney by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007, Earth Hour has become the world’s biggest grassroots environmental movement.
In addition to a long list of city and country landmarks, individuals, families, schools and communities across Australia have registered to join in.
In Brisbane, lights will be switched off on the Story Bridge, the Brisbane Wheel at Southbank, Brisbane Convention Centre and other Brisbane City Council buildings between 8.30pm and 9.30pm or longer.
Community contributions include the Logan City Council showing the movie “Finding Dory” under the stars on a solar powered movie screen for its ratepayers.
Another Earth Hour community event will be a lantern parade at Eumundie on the Sunshine Coast which will kick off at 2pm in the Amphitheatre with live music and lantern making workshops. The lantern parade begins at 6.30pm.
